Fixer Upper Inspired Lighting

Screen Shot 2016-06-04 at 11.14.09 AM

It’s no secret that Fixer Upper has taken over the world and infected the minds of small town America everywhere! Our clients at work are really no different. Everyone loves Joanna and what she does. I find myself channeling my inner JoJo a lot lately for projects, like when I put together this sunroom design for a client.

Don’t get me wrong, I like this look, but I’m itching to do something different. It’s just further proof I need to move to the beach. You midwest people all eat this stuff up, though. I feel like lately all I do at work is pick out lighting straight out of JoJo’s design book…(She doesn’t have one yet, but she will.) I figured I might as well share my finds. They ARE great finds, even if I’m feeling a little bored with it, it doesn’t mean it isn’t still a great look.

Sweet and Simple

I’ve been pretty open about how tough life is, lately. Shane is constantly traveling for work, and JoJo and I are flying solo. It makes life rough to say the least. Tackling being a mom to a very opinionated (yes, she totally got it from her mamma) 1 and a half year old completely on your own is…HARD. On top of all the time apart, we are at a major crossroads in life. We’re both making huge decisions about our career paths and taking big risks. It’s incredibly stressful, to say the least.  Today I had a moment, though. As I was putting on my makeup and my shadow was pretending to put on her makeup, I suddenly knew that down the road I’m REALLY going to miss this point in my life. Regardless of how much I’ve wished it away, I will miss the time when it was just me and my sweet little girl, in our sweet little house. As much as I’ve hated being alone, I also want to remember this. I want to remember our bond. Life is tough right now, but our days are so sweet and simple.

Life Lately

It’s been a while since I’ve blogged! I’m so terrible at consistency! Just not my strong suit. I’m working on it, though! I’ve been consistently working out lately.IMG_2524 I felt like I needed a photo as evidence. Most awkward selfie I’ve ever taken….So embarrassing. Almost as embarrassing as how much I love Taylor Swift. My life has significantly improved since I realized that I’m actually not too cool for T Swift…Or gym selfies. I just want to be sure that when I get ripped no one confuses my hard work for good genetics. Side note: That’s my brother- in-law in the picture. He’s working hard, too, and we coincidentally are on the same gym schedule.

Working out is occupying a lot of my time and head space lately. 4ish months ago I nearly threw out all my bikinis. I though, “Well, I won’t be needing these anymore.” And then I realized I was taking the easy way out. I’ve always been in fairly good shape, but I’ve never been totally ripped. It’s now or never, people! I figure I might as well try once. My husband and I are super competitive with each other, and he’s been in insanely good shape before, (and getting there again) I can’t let him one up me like that! I’ll keep you posted on if it actually happens. I think it will. I’m pretty motivated, but it’s pretty hard for me to imagine. Abs? What are those? This Instagram account has been pretty motivating for me!

Aside from the working out, This past weekend I was on the West Coast getting one of my very best friends married off! It was a really fun weekend, and some much needed time away completely solo. No kid and no husband! That NEVER happens.

I got to flex my creative muscles a bit and do all the flower arranging, too! Way fun!

In design news…I’ve been working on a fun project for work. It’s sort of in the waiting phase, but should wrap up early June. It’s been super fun, because even though the couple came from an incredibly traditional house, they are now living in a downtown loft, and totally game for all things modern and fun. These are just some of the pieces we’re getting to use that I’m really excited about.

In additional design news….

I scored this wall hanging at a rummage sale for 25 cents! I have no idea where I will put it, but I love it!

Warm weather is almost here to stay in Indiana! Hallelujah for shorts season! When I first had Jolie, I tried to class up my shorts game a bit in order to look more motherly, but it just wasn’t me. This year, I honestly just don’t care! I like cut off jean shorts and I may just rock them until I’m 50. I apologize in advance. I recently restocked my probably-to-young-for-me shorts collection.

I picked up these from H&M.

Screen Shot 2016-05-12 at 12.35.18 PM

And these.

Screen Shot 2016-05-12 at 12.40.41 PM

Crop tops and high waisted short are basically my summer uniform.

I’ve been wearing the heck out of this simple black mock turtle neck crop top.

Screen Shot 2016-05-12 at 12.44.01 PM

I also bought my second EVER romper the other day. How late to that scene am I, right?!? I always felt like they looked a little awkward on me, but suddenly the ease of putting on one clothing item and still looking pulled together, has me SOLD! I’m all about easy, and it just doesn’t get any easier….until you have pee, but I’ll hold it.

For mother’s day, the hubby got me this MVMT watch!

Screen Shot 2016-05-12 at 12.50.36 PM

I’ve been wanting one for a while, and let me tell you….It did not disappoint! It’s such a nice watch for roughly $100. Seriously, I was so impressed from the packaging, to the expensive feel! The all black one is next on my list!

Last but for sure not least….Jolie!!! She’s getting insanely big! She has really turned the corner from  baby to toddler and I’m loving it!

She’s my little partner in crime everywhere I go, and it makes life a lot more fun!

We spend all of our time outside. Bubbles are king, and dunking her entire head in the water table is a close second.

Also, putting babies in the food processor. 😁 Toddlers are sometimes terrifying!

Life is perfectly simple, lately. After years of constant travel, it feels good to live at a slow pace! It makes for boring blogs (sorry), but a happy heart! 😍

Practicing Gratitude

I feel like my blog has been a bit impersonal, lately. When I initially started blogging, I wanted it to be all projects I was doing in my own home. I didn’t think 6 years ahead and what I would blog about once all our projects were done! I never thought I would seriously keep it up so long! Yeah, blogging hasn’t always been super consistent for me, but I can’t believe I’m still doing it and still really enjoying it! It might be the longest I’ve ever stuck with ANYTHING. Scratch that, I do have an 12+ year old sports bra that’s still going strong….till death do us part, but that’s it. That sports bra and blogging.

I’ve been feeling a little, “What now?” about the whole blogging thing. We’re mostly done with our house. We have a few maintenance type projects, but for the first time in…well…EVER, I’m completely satisfied with our house. Showing you more pictures is only redundant now, because nothing has changed! So, I’ve been showing you design stuff that catches my fancy and what I hope to do in the future, but our future is seriously up in the air. Our plans change almost daily. Although, we really hope to sell and buy a new house this year, that’s today’s plan. Tomorrow we will likely decide that we plan to retire in this house. Just kidding. I don’t think that will ever be the plan, but we’re so all over the place who knows?!?! So all that is to say, someday in the nearish future, I hope I’m once again showing you remodel happening in our house, but for now the remodeling is done.

I’m left feeling like, “well then how do I still make things personal around here?” I think the answer is to just be personal. If you absolutely don’t want to hear me ramble about my life and what’s happening in it….now is a good time to check out, ’cause it’s about to go down.

So, someone once told me that women go a little cray cray when they turn 30. Well, I think I’m feeling it….ahead of schedule. I turned 29 a few months ago, and for the first time in my life I’m wishing things would slow down a little. Historically, I’ve been the exact opposite. I couldn’t wait to be on to the next stage in life. Reality suddenly hit real hard around here. I have this incredibly vivid memory of telling someone I was 22. NO WAY was that really 7 years ago. OMG! Life is just flying by, and in a strange way it feels like I’m missing it.

I’ve been feeling kind of sorry for myself lately. When I think about the last year and a half, it feels like I’ve mostly been a single mother. Yes, I have a husband, but he travels so much for his job. He has missed huge chunks of Jolie’s life, my life, OUR life together. It’s really so easy to start wishing our time apart away. All of the sudden it’s starting to click for me, though. You get one shot at life. One shot at this year. Even if it’s not ideal, I better figure out how to make the absolute best of it. I don’t want to feel like I’m missing out on life another. single. day.

Shane and I had a conversation about gratitude the other day. It seems like all super successful and happy people identify gratitude as an important philosophy to live by. It really resonated with me. Of course, when I’m asked, I can immediately come up with handfuls of things that I’m grateful for, but lately I’m practicing FEELING gratitude. I’m working on letting it fill me up.

I’m letting moments like these be enough. This sweet girl is only this big ONCE.

I’m working on seeing the world like she does. It is one big adventure and I need to be eager to get out in it!

And bubbles really ARE the coolest thing ever…

I’m going to not worry about getting my hair wet.

And I’m going to get excited about the little things, like my very first herb garden!

I have so much to be grateful for!

I have a super fun job, where I get to help design spaces like this!

And I’ve been getting a decent amount of my own design work on the side. I’m currently helping a family totally redo and really love their house without spending a ton of money.

Which I feel like is where I really shine. Getting to do this is something I need to learn to really be grateful for. Um hello…I’m living my dreams over here!!!

When I spend time filling myself with gratitude, I get embarrassed that I was ever feeling sorry for myself. The truth is life is passing me by more quickly than I’d hoped. No matter how tough it seems, no matter how much I wish my circumstances were different, life is good. So incredibly good. It’s time to slow down, take it in, and enjoy it! Oh… And also stretch more…because I’m insanely inflexible and this body has got to last me! 😉

Naturally, I’m obsessed with following blogs. Which is not something I talk about a ton, and I should! It’s time to share the love, and show you guys what I’m LOVING in the blogosphere! Here we go!

chrislovesjulia.com

LOVE this one! What they’ve done with their previously builder grade house, is just ridonk!  I follow/stalk her on all social media platforms and I feel like we’re friends! She’s really doing it right and feels so approachable even though I’ve never met her! The last few days she’s had me on the edge of my seat waiting to see a room redo they did in 24 hours. She shared little snippets on snapchat and it looks like it’s going to be fab!

Screen Shot 2016-04-11 at 9.58.22 AM

She shared this plan for the space  on her BLOG earlier this week. These chairs had me all like, “Uhhh….are you sure?” Then when I saw them in real life (by real life I mean on Snapchat)  I was SO surprised! I loved them! I love when someone is able to surprise me with a choice like that!  Be sure to check her out! Her kitchen is to die for, and even better…her husband does most the cooking! So lucky…I want to be her.

Amber Lewis Interiors

I’ve shared my love for Amber Lewis before. The love runs deep, kids. She’s on snapchat now, too. So, yeah, we’re friends… (In my head.) This chick is SO SO talented and when I checked out her blog yesterday I about died… I had just told Shane the night before that for our next kitchen I wanted to do light wood cabinets. This was on her blog!Screen Shot 2016-04-11 at 10.09.41 AM

And this….recognize this kitchen? I blogged about it last week!

Screen Shot 2016-04-11 at 10.09.50 AM

Ummm…I know it sounds dumb, but it’s like a dream come true to be anywhere near her design aesthetic. The fact that we like the same stuff has me all giddy! She’s mega successful…and cool!! She’s writing a book and for sure, for sure it’s going to be a coffee table staple at my house! Check out her blog and portfolio…it’s the best!

House Tweaking

I came across this blog, because she actually linked our kitchen on it! I’ve since religiously kept up with her blog. While she’s got great style, no doubt…I’m most inspired by her financial philosophies of homeownership. She’s got me seriously motivated to follow in her footsteps! She, her husband, and 3 kids downsized with the goal of being mortgage free by 40. AND…..THEY DID IT, 3 years ahead of schedule!

Screen Shot 2016-04-11 at 10.21.14 AMScreen Shot 2016-04-11 at 10.20.38 AM

I mean look at that place! Downsizing doesn’t have to be a downgrade, and beautiful houses don’t have to be expensive houses! (Um…hello midwest…cheap houses galore!) I now have the same goal… mortgage free by 40. Although, if our plans work out the way we’d like, it should be before then! Be sure you check out her blog...She also has the studio space of my dreams!

There are a few other blogs I check up on, but these three are my staples! Now go waste HOURS exploring them! You’re welcome 🙂

House Dreams

I love our house…I really do. It’s home, and it feels like “us.”

IMG_9202IMG_9212IMG_9218

But…It feels a bit below our design talent at this point. :/ That felt gross saying…I can’t help it, though. I think it’s true. Shane and I have grown LIGHTYEARS this past year! I really feel like we’ve taken our skills to A WHOLE NEW LEVEL. Given a new house, we’d take design risks that we’ve never ever considered before, and I feel like we finally have the talent to pull it off! We don’t have a new house yet and we’re likely a year or more away from a new house, but I can’t keep myself from dreaming up what we’d do next. While we played it pretty safe in this house, I love the idea of pushing ourselves and designing a house that is truly a work of art! Here are some examples of a direction I’d love to go with a new house!

This kitchen is ummm…. emotional for me. I wish I was kidding. It’s so so lovely! I’d maybe add some different elements in, but there are parts of this kitchen that I’d marry.

Are you catching my vibe with all these spaces? I’m so ready to stretch our talent a bit and see just how far we can take it!

Outside

Yesterday had to have been the most beautiful Easter Sunday I can remember! Jolie and I spend the entire day outside! Little JoJo and I are dying to get outside on the daily! I’m thinking we’ve got lots of fun outside days ahead of us! It’s one of the few places she doesn’t prefer my lap over everything. She can run around the yard, and I can get some empty lap relaxing time!

We’ve got a decent outdoor set up! (Don’t mind the terrible pictures. I didn’t get around to taking pictures until dusk when the lighting was poo.) I drug it all out of Winter storage yesterday. It’s comfortable and looks pretty good, but truth be told it was all kind of an afterthought. In the past we always tried to tackle too much at once and the outdoor space just didn’t take budget priority. I would have done a few things differently had we more time and money. Lesson learned! Outdoor spaces can look awesome, though. Here’s what I would do if I could do it all again! I still wouldn’t spend a lot of money….but I’d make some different choices!

We currently have an Ikea outdoor sectional. It has since been discontinued and suddenly their sectionals got a WHOLE lot better! You really can’t beat the price for something that looks this nice. I’d so much rather have this one than ours. :/

Screen Shot 2016-03-25 at 12.03.26 PM

I LOOOOVE outdoor rugs! I’m not sure how practical it wold be for us since we don’t have a covered area, and it would get exposed to ALL the elements. I’d really like to try, though. We spend SOOOOO much time outdoors. I really want it to feel like a cozy living room.

Screen Shot 2016-03-25 at 12.08.46 PM

We have this IKEA umbrella and I wouldn’t change a thing about it! Except maybe get another one! I LOVE it! It’s huge ad provides so much shade. It’s a really great buy.

Screen Shot 2016-03-25 at 7.22.20 PM.jpg

I’ve always been sooooo tempted to take my Ikea poufs outside. I’m not quite done with them inside, though. If I could do it all over again I’d get some for outside! I’m not sure they are totally weather proof, so I’d likely try to seal them somehow.

Screen Shot 2016-03-25 at 7.24.31 PM

This wasn’t supposed to be a strictly Ikea post, and it’s bot totally, but it’s really hard to beat their outdoor furniture. It’s so affordable. I love this modern outdoor chair.

Screen Shot 2016-03-25 at 7.43.20 PM

Outdoor pillows are my FAV! It seems like I add a few every year. These guys are just too perfect though!

Screen Shot 2016-03-25 at 7.46.20 PM

These too!

Screen Shot 2016-03-25 at 8.55.46 PM.jpg

I really want some modern outdoor chairs. I might end up replacing our dining chairs this year. There’s nothing wrong with ours but they aren’t great. We got them on major end of season clearance a few years ago and they are nothing special. These white ones seem perfect. Modern and CHEAP!

Screen Shot 2016-03-25 at 8.21.17 PM

Ikea for the win again with this table.

I’m a lantern FREAK! I LOVE lanterns.

Have you browsed through Targets outdoor collection yet this year? DO IT! They have some seriously great pots!

There it is…my outdoor set up if I could have a redo!
